Exploring Egypt: From the Great Pyramids to the Red Sea
Egypt was one of the most transformative and culturally enriching trips I’ve ever taken. The country’s deep-rooted history, ancient wonders, and the sheer contrast between bustling cities and tranquil coastal resorts make it a must-visit destination. The trip was split into two parts: Cairo and the resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh, providing a balance between historical exploration and beach relaxation.
Cairo: Where Ancient Wonders Meet Modern Chaos
Cairo is a city that is both awe-inspiring and overwhelming. With its rich history and chaotic energy, it provides a true cultural immersion. One of the most surreal experiences of my life was riding camels with my group of 13 friends past the Great Pyramids of Giza. These ancient monuments are even more impressive in person, towering over the desert landscape. Fun fact: you can actually go inside the pyramids and ascend to the top to view an ancient, empty tomb—a claustrophobic yet fascinating journey into history.
A few days in Cairo are enough to explore the key sights. I recommend spending 3-4 days to visit the pyramids, the Egyptian Museum, and take a cruise on the Nile River. It’s important to manage expectations, as Cairo can be chaotic, noisy, and overwhelming at times, especially for first-time visitors. During our stay, we had the advantage of staying with a local friend, Omar, whose father is a general in the Egyptian military, which added a unique cultural perspective to our experience.
What to See in Cairo:
- The Pyramids of Giza – The highlight of Cairo, these structures are one of the last remaining wonders of the ancient world.
- The Sphinx – Located near the pyramids, this iconic statue is a must-see.
- The Egyptian Museum – Home to over 120,000 artifacts, including the treasures of Tutankhamun, the museum offers a deep dive into Egypt’s ancient history.
Sharm El-Sheikh: A Relaxing Red Sea Paradise
After soaking in the rich history of Cairo, we flew to Sharm El-Sheikh, a coastal resort town situated along the Red Sea. In stark contrast to the bustling streets of Cairo, Sharm El-Sheikh offers tranquility, stunning beaches, and endless water activities. The water temperature in the Red Sea during the summer is a delightful 86°F (30°C), making it ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving.
The Red Sea is one of the best places in the world to dive, with crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life. We spent much of our time boating to small islands and exploring the underwater world through snorkeling and diving. The all-inclusive resort where we stayed offered a wide range of activities, from lounging by the pool to guided boat tours.
One of the standout experiences in Sharm El-Sheikh was the ATV Mountain Tour. We explored the mountains at sunset, a magical time when the desert comes alive with stunning colors. The tour ended with a traditional Bedouin show featuring dancing cobras, camel rides, and local food—a perfect way to immerse ourselves in the local culture.
Must-Do Activities in Sharm El-Sheikh:
- Scuba Diving and Snorkeling in the Red Sea – The Red Sea is famous for its clear waters and colorful coral reefs. Don’t miss diving off small islands or around the coral reefs.
- ATV Mountain Tour – Explore the desert mountains, culminating in a sunset view and an entertaining Bedouin show.
- Boating – Take a boat tour to explore the various islands and experience the beauty of the Red Sea up close.
