The Acatenango Volcano hike is one of the most unforgettable adventure experiences in Guatemala. This multi-day trip begins in the historic city of Antigua before heading into the mountains for an overnight hike and volcano camping experience high above the clouds. From camp, you’ll have a front-row view of Volcán Fuego, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, erupting throughout the night.

Travelers will hike through changing landscapes, camp near the summit, and have the opportunity to reach the Acatenango summit at sunrise for sweeping views of Guatemala’s volcanic range. This Acatenango Volcano experience is a 3-night adventure that blends time in Antigua with an overnight volcano hike, a sunset trek toward Volcán Fuego, and an optional sunrise summit. Extra nights in Antigua can be added if you’d like to extend your stay.

    Day 1: Arrival in Antigua

Arrive in Guatemala and settle into Antigua, a historic colonial town surrounded by volcanoes. The evening is free to explore the city at your own pace — enjoy the restaurants, walk the cobblestone streets, or relax and prepare for the hike ahead.

    Overnight in Antigua.

The ascent takes you through farmland, cloud forest, and volcanic terrain, with rest stops along the way. By mid to late afternoon, you’ll arrive at a private volcano basecamp positioned directly across from Volcán Fuego.

Once at basecamp, you’ll have a couple of hours to rest, hydrate, warm up, and take in the views. Near sunset, you’ll set out on an optional hike toward Volcán Fuego for a closer look at its eruptions.

    • Estimated Fuego hike time: ~2 hours round trip

After returning to basecamp, dinner is served, followed by time to relax by the fire and watch Fuego continue erupting throughout the night. Hot drinks are available as you settle in for the evening.

    Overnight at volcano basecamp.

Optional support: Horses are available for the first portion of the Acatenango hike for an additional cost (approximately $130 USD one way, paid on site).

Day 3: Sunrise Summit & Return to Antigua

Before sunrise, you’ll have the option to hike to the Acatenango summit.

    • Summit hike: ~1 hour up (estimated)

From the summit, take in panoramic views above the clouds as the sun rises over Guatemala’s volcanic range, with Volcán Fuego still active nearby.

After descending back to basecamp, enjoy a hot drink and light refreshment before packing up and beginning the hike down.

    Refunds

    • Refunds are not provided for missed flights, missed activity times, or personal no-shows.
