Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi: A Rare and Unforgettable Experience
If you're looking for a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife adventure, gorilla trekking in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Forest is an experience like no other. Bwindi is one of the only places on Earth where you can see wild mountain gorillas up close, with nearly half of the world’s 1,060 remaining gorillas—about 470—living in this dense forest. The rest can be found in neighboring parts of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Starting the Journey in Rwanda
The adventure begins with a flight into Kigali, Rwanda, where we spent the night to explore the city. The following morning, Safari Vacations and Travel Services, our tour operator, picked us up and took us to the Kigali Genocide Memorial. This deeply moving museum provides a profound look into Rwanda’s tragic past, documenting the 1994 genocide that resulted in nearly a million deaths in just 100 days. The exhibits, filled with survivor testimonies, photographs, and personal artifacts, offer a somber but important perspective on the country’s history and resilience.
After this visit, we embarked on a four to five-hour scenic drive through rolling hills and lush landscapes to cross into Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Our lodge for the night was a mid-range accommodation, a perfect balance of comfort and affordability.
The Gorilla Trekking Experience
Early the next morning, we set off for gorilla trekking, the highlight of the trip. After a safety briefing, our group was assigned to a specific gorilla family and set out on foot through the dense, misty forest. The trek to locate the gorillas can take anywhere from one to four hours, depending on their movements that day. Fortunately, our group found our assigned gorilla family in just one hour.
Seeing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat was surreal. We were allowed to spend one full hour observing them up close—watching as they played, groomed each other, and relaxed just feet away from us. The moment was both humbling and exhilarating, reminding us of how rare and precious these animals are.
After the trek, we celebrated with a "graduation ceremony," receiving official gorilla trekking certificates before returning to the lodge for a relaxing evening.
Exploring Lake Bunyonyi
Before wrapping up our adventure, we took a boat ride on Lake Bunyonyi, often called the “Switzerland of Africa” due to its breathtaking scenery. Along the way, we spotted zebras, antelopes, and a variety of bird species, while learning about the history of the islands, including the infamous Punishment Island, where unmarried pregnant women were historically abandoned.
