Winter Wonderland in Fairbanks, Alaska: Northern Lights, Dog Sledding, and More

If you're looking for a winter adventure that’s accessible from the West Coast of the U.S., Fairbanks, Alaska should be at the top of your list. One of my favorite trips to date, Alaska during the winter offers an abundance of breathtaking experiences, from the mesmerizing Northern Lights to thrilling snowmobiling and dog sledding.

We visited Fairbanks in December, during the winter solstice, which is the shortest day of the year. Surprisingly, it wasn’t pitch dark the entire time. Instead, the city had a prolonged, enchanting sunrise and sunset with daylight fading around 4 PM. The unique lighting created an ethereal atmosphere, and I found it to be one of the most beautiful experiences of my travels.

Where to Stay: A Taste of Alaska Lodge

For a cozy, welcoming stay, I highly recommend A Taste of Alaska Lodge. This traditional bed-and-breakfast offers a warm, rustic charm and the chance to see the northern lights directly from the lodge. They even provide an aurora alarm, so you won’t miss out on this magical phenomenon. The lodge also rents out warm clothing and boots at affordable rates—essential for the frigid temperatures! Owner Cory goes above and beyond to ensure guests feel at home. More information can be found on their website.

Top Activities: Dog Sledding and Snowmobiling

One of my top highlights was dog sledding with Paws for Adventure. This incredible experience is something I couldn’t recommend enough. The cost was around $150 per person, and it was worth every penny. The company allows you to drive the sleds through the snowy wilderness, an adventure that brings you closer to nature. Their website can be found here.

Another standout experience was snowmobiling with Rod's Alaskan Guide Service. We took a two-hour tour over a frozen lake at sunset, which cost $250 per person. The guides were excellent and gave us the freedom to “rip” the snowmobiles, unlike many places where you’re required to follow a single-file line. Plus, the snowmobiles came with heated handlebars, which was a huge bonus for keeping warm! You can learn more about Rod's Alaskan Guide Service here.

Unique Encounters: Reindeer Ranch and Hot Springs

If you’re an animal lover, don’t miss spending a couple of hours with the local reindeer at Running Reindeer Ranch. This fun and unique activity costs around $90, and it’s an amazing way to interact with these majestic creatures in a snowy Alaskan setting. For more details, check out their website.

Lastly, for a relaxing end to your adventurous days, visit the Chena Hot Springs to soak in the warm waters while gazing up at the stars and, if you're lucky, catching another glimpse of the aurora.
